Casting....

This little experiment/exercise gave me new appreciation for the art of casting and sculpture. It is a long delicate process and I'll admit I was utterly stupid for not carefully documenting each step of the process as it was being taught. Now I will have to be guided through it all again, trusty camera at my side. Let that be a lesson to those of you out there who organise casting classes, take your camera and takes notes...lots of notes!!

This is a wax template from the mold I made. This is just the first stage completed, and it took a week! From here to cast in bronze I would have to smooth off the unwanted bumps etc (using fine sandpaper and white spirit) and then start on another very long and equally delicate process to produce a bronze version of the sculpture. Luckily though I'm not heading in that direction. I need the mold making skills in order to cast my clay models in resin. First I will have to go back to the beginning to try and master this first stage of mold making. I can see why this avenue of fine art can take over your life. It requires patience and dedication. For the moment I am merely dabbling!
