Today we begin the second layer of silicone rubber. This is smoothed on ontop of the first thin layer which has now completely dried over night (though this particular kind of silicon seems to remains ever so slightly tacky to the touch.) I have added thixotropic to the original 2 to 1 mix in order to reach an icing sugar consistency. It is smoothed on in small circles, the goal is to create as smooth a surface as possible with as few 'peaks' or 'undercuts' as possible. This way when the finished silicone mold has to be fitted back into the hard outer plaster layer it is easier!
Large featured undercuts (such as under the ears) and gaping spaces (such as inside the mouth) are padded out by first applying a layer of silicone and then fitting, as closely as possible, a piece of sponge. This helps bulk and smooth out these areas, once again making it much easier to fit the finished silicone mold into the plaster outer shell.
